The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom remarked when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as governor ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any determination is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
He has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and pushing a initiative that would increase the party's congressional seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This move has made him a target from political opponents.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. Duffy announced a strategy to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and warned suspending the state's ability to provide trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," he declared, in the wake of a this week's fatal crash in California involving an undocumented trucker that caused loss of life and casualties.
His administration highlighted that the national authorities had approved the driver's employment multiple times, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was withholding $40m from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office retorted in a last month's release responding to the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
A recent survey found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an average of 33.5% from around 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.
Earlier this year, Newsom commented while on a trip several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
