The England national team will initiate their Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they achieve the anticipated qualification for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an Three Lions game since eight years ago, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to host the national team for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.
England are set to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, should they win their group, their last-16 tie would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The event was launched at an gathering in central London on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were heckled as they approached the venue by approximately 50 protesters, who urged Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the situation in Gaza.
Placards were displayed with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
The opening game of the tournament will be held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will include the Welsh team if they qualify.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a start time at 5pm.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for European club finals from the following campaign, will cater to families and help reach a wider spectrum of viewers.
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach the finals through the qualification path.
Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals played at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
“The event will be a tournament for the followers and a celebration of everything we cherish about the sport – its fervor and power to unite individuals.”
More than three million admissions, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are projected to be released to supporters.
