Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams declared his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Adams changed his position, announcing he now intends to support the former governor in communities where he holds strong support.

“It is crucial to energize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams commented.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has made headlines worldwide and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
