A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen people got wounded in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house near the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and another man who fled following the explosion was located not long after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area displayed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.
The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.
Negotiators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings caused the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed news outlets.
A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.
The wounded by the incident included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The prosecutor was convinced the blast had happened on a story above the access point and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told Italian media, noting that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the line of duty.
