A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials stated the forty-year-old entertainer was approached by three suspects, one of whom shot at him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose behind the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested have taken place, as per the official statement.
Authorities revealed that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the building managing the installation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unidentified individuals, it was reported.
"The report indicates the man was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement said.
Security camera video reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and clad in what looked like a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before running away.
The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but collapsed a short distance away.
It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the incident.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the crime scene.
Authorities have requested members of the public who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"We know they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to find their destination," stated a police chief.
His family member, a close relative, stated the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were willing to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."
She requested the community to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, explaining this was an deeply traumatic time, particularly for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that was broadcast on a South African TV network.
Beyond his media career, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including protective services, offering high-level security services and securing major functions across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in real estate operations and participated in building evictions.
His murder has sent the nation reeling and prompted an flood of condolences from his fans, the government and political parties.
A government minister said he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.
"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even criticized me and my actions as a public official. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.
A public representative commented the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director said that "DJ Warras was more than just a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a true devotee of sound and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His dedication to creativity left an indefinable mark."
In a release, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and quick humor, adding that his memory "will be remembered".
