Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was ā€œupbeatā€ during a recent discussion.

ā€œThat’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,ā€ Glenn stated on Wednesday. ā€œHis wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.ā€

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

ā€œStill unsure,ā€ he added. ā€œBut I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.ā€

NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind ā€œa tonā€ since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

ā€œWhat immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,ā€ Glenn noted. ā€œAnd I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
ā€œA certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.ā€

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

ā€œHe has stayed engaged with the team,ā€ Glenn said. ā€œI mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.ā€

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
