The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.
The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
