New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the player and his coach.
