The Mystery Within that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he battles the control of a dark entity, similar to how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists.
