The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
