This year's National Basketball Association season starts this week, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Aussie two most prominent hoops stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
This change signals a transition period, as Australian backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as key starters for contending teams, with new nine-figure contracts establishing them as some of Australia’s top sporting earners.
They aren't the only ones. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for playing time around the league, including veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
After lengthy discussions with the Bulls, Giddey ultimately signed his new deal worth $100m (A$153 million) over four seasons recently. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is affordable for his role and reputation as a lead playmaker. The reluctance for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the 23-year-old enters this season with much to prove.
After being moved by the Thunder at the start of last season, Giddey watched as his former squad charged to the title without him. As the Bulls aim to reach the postseason in the weaker East, he will have to show his shooting and defence are elite-level or else he may fall back towards the NBA’s fringe.
Daniels signed the identical contract as his counterpart recently, and after his MIP honor last year, the Atlanta player's career has taken off in Atlanta following his exit from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the league’s best defensive specialists, and topped the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg – more than one full steal per match greater than the tally of the runner-up.
Playing next to dynamic Trae Young in the Hawks, the 22-year-old can be effective this campaign as a playmaking option and elite defender as long as the team advance to the postseason. But if he can improve his three-point shooting, which was subpar last season, and continue to develop his passing and attacking, Daniels could become one of the association's most well-rounded players.
Indiana wing Furphy has burst onto the scene as a crowd favorite in the state following a series of spectacular dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics led NBA personality Pat Beverley to label him as the “best white dunker we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be on the table.
Following playing just eight minutes per contest over 50 appearances in his rookie campaign, the ex- college player is in contention for a Pacers lineup that might favor young players following setback to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Guard Proctor fell in the June draft all the way to the second round, where Eastern Conference contenders Cleveland picked him. The Cavs are front-runners to reach the Finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be unusual for a rookie taken in the late picks to see significant playing minutes. But the Australian has earned time in exhibition play, and his pro-level shooting gives him a opportunity to contribute.
Veteran centre Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting centre spot in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the start of the campaign after ankle surgery.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see regular action if the team become in the hunt. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is expected to be deployed as a defensive spark off the bench.
In the Hornets, Josh Green’s summer shoulder surgery has left him without a timeline to come back. The player still has a contract for the upcoming year, but will not want to allow his teammates at the developing Charlotte too much head start. And injury has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has missed important pre-season chances in the Mavericks.
Additionally, there are those who are unlikely to see a lot of, if any, court time this year. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but appears to be primarily a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards in check.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be developed by the Wolves through their affiliate team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be aiming to earn playing time alongside Proctor for the Cavaliers.
If there were any doubts Mills was planning to end his career, he answered them with a training clip posted on his social media over the weekend, demonstrating the veteran is still sharp and determined on securing one more league deal.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an off-season in his homeland, going fishing and using with a Sherrin. Even though he took to social media recently to reject rumors he was retired, the 29-year-old – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
